I had edited video to the beat as a practice. This skill needs to be practiced now so that when it comes to editing the actual music video that we already know how to do it properly and have it perfected in the end product. This was also practical research to learn how to play around with the split-screen properly and test out the effects in more depth. This task was also used as a refresher to our memory about editing and all the tools that are a necessity when editing this music video such as the razor tool which is used to help cut off a scene at a certain point. I thought that i edited this video quite well especially the split-screen part as all the shots when they were cutting in and out were still fairly on the beat. However by watching it over a few times i have realised that it seems just a little bit off and thats what a few other people noted as well.
In this picture here you can see me messing around with the speed settings slowing it down and making it play backwards.
Here you can see that i was messing about with the split screen trying to put things in place.
In our first group meeting we had decided the music video that we wanted to remake. The song that we had agreed on was 'Unbelievable' by owl city. We had had some previous ideas however they had been disregarded. They mostly consisted of rock/pop sort of songs however we choose this song mainly because of the lyrics.
"Unbelievable" (feat. Hanson) It's unbelievable This is as good as it gets It's unbelievable Don't know what's gonna happen next It's unbelievable You haven't seen nothing yet It's unbelievable, it's unbelievable When I was a kid I saved up all my dough so I could buy C-3PO Put Mentos in my Diet Coke in the backseat of the bus When I was a kid I ate "Spaghetti Os", played laser tag and GI Joe's And if you vowed no girls allowed then you could join the club When I was a kid I spent my Saturday's Blowin' on Nintendo games The newest thing was Lion King and I could feel the love It's unbelievable This is as good as it gets It's unbelievable Don't know what's gonna happen next It's unbelievable You haven't seen nothing yet It's unbelievable, it's unbelievable [Hanson:] When I was a kid I dreamed of Power Wheels Stayed up late watching action films And I won't lie, my friends and I, were too legit to quit When I was a kid I lived for climbing trees ate Dr Pepper jellybeans My favourite part of "Jurassic Park" was how real the Raptors looked When I was a kid I still had VHS, watched Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff Zack Morris owned the first cell phone, it was off the hook! It's unbelievable This is as good as it gets It's unbelievable Don't know what's gonna happen next It's unbelievable You haven't seen nothing yet It's unbelievable, it's unbelievable Cat, pogs, and floam and home alone, Berenstein bears and bean bag chairs My L.A. Looks and Goosebumps books, oh Etch-a-sketch What happens next? Grape juicy juice and Dr. Seuss, piggy-back rides and Slip-n-slides, McDonalds Fries, those were the best What happens next? It's unbelievable This is as good as it gets It's unbelievable Don't know what's gonna happen next It's unbelievable You haven't seen nothing yet It's unbelievable, those were the days oh-oh It's unbelievable When I think back I'm amazed It's unbelievable Cause baby those were the days It's unbelievable It ruled in so many ways It's unbelievable, it's unbelievable (And I'm so amazed!) (Those were the days!)
We had asked an audience to view our song and give their thoughts on on the song. First we asked them to give us three words that comes to mind whilst hearing this song and they came up with that it is upbeat, bubbly and that it is nostalgic. The audience had then said that no other artists come to mind when they listen to it. After watching this video from this artist they all believe that the rest of this artists music videos would be as creative as this one, and most of them would be animated too. The research group also expressed that this song created a happy mood and if the song was to be described as a colour that it would be bubblegum blue. They had also announced that it creates certain images in their minds and it was mainly about their childhood and being young and doing some of the things mentioned in the video because they were young and also naive. They decided to also mention that the narrative of this song is older people trying to relive their childhood by doing activities they used to.
A performance based video shows the artist/band/group performance throughout the song and sometimes can play throughout the whole video. This type of video is tends to be used on a lower budget. An example of a performance based video is 'The living' by Performance . In the video you can see the band performing in the middle of a room which is pure white which is quite an unusual place for someone to perform. Also performance videos tend to have an audience in the background but this one doesn't so it stands out. The varied amount of camera angles and focus on different members of the band keeps the video interesting. In the video the band are quite theatrical with features such as movement and makeup. Another example of a performance based video is 'Chop Suey' by System of a Down.
Narrative Based
A narrative based music video is one that tells that is either told or suggested through the lyrics of the song. The music video itself tends to contain people actually playing out the story.A narrative based video tends to have the story revolve around the artist, however pure narrative based videos just has a beginning, middle and end. A good example of a narrative based music video is 'Bad Day' by Daniel Powter. The lyrics are talking about having a bad day which is then also played out as a story in the actual music video.
Cinematic Based
Cinematic based music videos are music videos that are almost like a short film but more compressed. They tend to latch onto some sort of story. 'Thriller' is a great cinematic music video especially through its great use of mise-en-scene as all the costumes, hair, make-up etc. was done extremely well especially considering how iconic this music video is.
Abstract/Concept
A concept based music video is a video that is based on an idea that has been formed. Most concept music videos are abstract and may seen a bit random or confusing. It normally doesn’t relate to the song lyrics however may have an underlying relationship or meaning with them. The concept can be arty and what not, however the video is used to create a certain feeling/mood during the viewing experience. 'Every teardrop is a waterfall' is a concept/performance/stop motion music video, and it is easy to see why it would seem random as the video has nothing to do with the lyrics.
Live concert
Live concert videos are videos that were of course live with a real active audience that views them. In concert videos the artists tend to get interactive with the audience. 'Fix you' by Coldplay was played live an is an example of a good live concert video.
Intertextual based
Intertextuality is the way in which one media text is referenced in another. An example of this is Robbie Williams 'Alice in Wonderland' style setting in his song 'You know me' with Robbie William's dressed up like as the rabbit as from the film. This creates intertextuality between the film and his music video. Not to mention at the end of the video the Metro- Goldwyn logo has been replaced with the rabbit instead of the lion.
Parody based
Parody based music videos involves changing currently existing musical ideas in the same style of the composer, artist or it may even be just the general type of music. Parodies normally tend to be some sort of mockery of the artist in a humorous way.
Pastiche Based
Pastiche based music videos are mimicry of of other artistic work however it isn't like a parody as it isn't a mockery. This type of music is used to admire a period time or an artists type of work. An example of this is Madonna 'Vogue'
Animation based
Animation based videos are ones that are of course animated meaning that is no real life actions or settings. However just because it is animated doesn't mean it may have been fully digitally. Animation can contain stop motion, claymation, puppets and much more.
Evaluation
As a first try it is a pretty low standard. This is mainly because the shots were unorganised, and the footage very poor so it made it fairly hard to edit and even when edited it barely makes sense as the movements from the different angles didn't match up this is mainly because of me messing around. There are many negatives to our first attempt this mainly consists of doing the same movements if using different camera shots. There needs to be better lip syncing as it somewhat seems like we weren't even singing. We had also needed to spend more time on it as we did this in a rush mainly because no-one wanted to do anything at first. This is one of the main improvements for our final music video consisting of everyone actually being able to take on the tasks that they may be assigned to so that the video can be produced better.
My
production team will consists of me (Destiny, on the left) and Jack (on the right). A production
team is the group of technical staff who produce a play, television show,
recording or film. Generally the term refers to all individuals
responsible for the technical aspects of creating of a particular product,
regardless of where in the process their expertise is required, or
how long they are involved in the project. Due to our group originally having 5 members we had to split into two sub groups. Although tragic we will be helping each other to make the other groups music video.
I am Destiny Ogbeide welcome to my A2 music video blog. On this blog i will be showing the journey of creating my music video from the research to the planning and construction. During the research, planning, filming and editing part of the course i will be working in a small group to complete it. I am going to also chart my progress as research, planning, construction and evaluation. From blogging in Year 12 a lot of different skills have been attained to help complete this blog to a higher standard.
